Bharat's father was a freedom fighter who was murdered by the British after a tip from his best friend, Harnam. Now, Bharat is going to Britain for college. There, he meets his father's best friend, a man who loves India but also loves the luxuries of Britain. Bharat also meets the man's daughter, Prithi. Prithi is completely Westernized. She smokes and drinks. Bharat is a full-blooded Indian. As Bharat and Prithi form a romance, Bharat meets Harnam. Harnam is also completely Westernized. Purab Aur Pacchim is a tale of how one man reminds Westernized Indians of the importance of maintaining heritage.
